Introduction
SWE provides scholarships for women who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering, engineering technology, or closely related fields.
Award timeline and payment
- Collegiate/Graduate and Emerging First Year scholarships: Awards for continuing undergraduates (sophomores, juniors, seniors) and graduate students typically begin to be issued in May (with freshman awards beginning in July). The selection process is usually finished by the end of August and all applicants will be notified of the outcome. Scholarship funds are disbursed in September.
- India scholarships: Award decisions are generally made in July for the upcoming academic year, and payments are issued in September.
Who must attend an ABET-accredited school
- Except for India Scholars applicants, all candidates should plan to attend an institution that offers ABET-accredited programs.
- Masters and PhD applicants must be enrolled in or accepted to a school that has ABET-accredited programs in engineering, computing, or technology.
- Undergraduate and community college applicants must intend to enroll in an ABET-accredited program in engineering, technology, or computing for the coming academic year.
Eligibility checklist (confirm before applying)
Applicants must:
- Identify as a woman.
- Be a full-time collegiate student in engineering or computer science for the upcoming academic year, OR be a re-entry student returning to study.
- Be enrolled in, or planning to attend, a program accredited by ABET. (For students in India, programs accredited by the India National Board of Accreditation or attendance at an eligible SWE Global Affiliate School in India are acceptable.)
- Have either a high school GPA greater than 3.5 OR a university GPA greater than 3.0.
How to apply
- Fill out the application for the category that matches your class status. Submitting the appropriate application automatically places you in consideration for all Society-selected scholarships for which you qualify.
- Emerging First Year Scholars Application — for students entering their first collegiate year. Opens February 10, 2025.
- Collegiate/Graduate Scholars Application — for rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and all graduate students (continuing undergraduates and new/continuing graduate students). Opens December 2, 2024.
- India Scholars Application — for students attending eligible SWE India-affiliated institutions. Opens February 10, 2025.
References and letters of recommendation
- Two letters of recommendation are required and must be submitted by the application deadline.
- It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure their references upload or submit their recommendation letters through the online system before the deadline.
After you submit
- Applications are reviewed and selections begin around May/June; final decisions will be communicated to all applicants by September.
- Students chosen to receive SWE scholarships will be asked to provide an official transcript and may be requested to submit additional documentation to confirm eligibility before funds are awarded.
