Conditions of Eligibility

This award is limited to U.S. citizens who are high school seniors or undergraduate students with definite plans to pursue STEM studies at an accredited U.S. college or university. Applicants must not have previously spoken at the Goddard Memorial Dinner. Materials required at submission include an unofficial transcript (high school and/or college), a brief statement of intent (150 words or less), and at least two letters of recommendation from faculty or science professionals. Incomplete applications that lack the required recommendation letters by the deadline will not be eligible for review.

Eligibility: U.S. citizenship; senior in high school through undergraduate; intent to pursue a STEM career at an accredited U.S. institution; preference for space-related interests; no prior Goddard Dinner speakers.

Application and Selection Process

Applicants submit an online application and, following submission, must upload a required video audition responding to the specified prompt. A panel selects finalists from the applicant pool; finalists submit a full draft of the eight-minute speech and deliver a five-minute presentation virtually to the Board of Directors in January. The winner is chosen by the National Space Club and Foundation and will deliver the keynote at the Goddard Memorial Dinner. The selection balances academic record, recommendations, written intent, and the video performance.

Application Timeline: Completed application and video must be uploaded by the October due date. Finalists present in January and the winner is notified in late January. Scholarship funds are sent to the institution no later than June 26, and the recipient must be available to speak at the March dinner.

Important Dates and Requirements

Adherence to format and deadlines is strict, particularly for the video audition. The required video must be 2 to 3 minutes long, feature the applicant speaking directly to camera on the topic “What role will you and your generation play in humanity’s future in space?”, and use MPEG-4 with H.264 & AAC encoding. Videos outside the 2–3 minute window will be removed and will disqualify the applicant. If selected, the recipient must be available for a live virtual audition in early January and to speak at the March dinner; travel and lodging for the recipient and one guest are provided.
