Colorado Masons' Benevolent Fund Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Colorado Masons' Benevolent Fund
Established in 1966, the Benevolent Fund Scholarship Committee of the Colorado Masons has granted over $8.5 million in scholarships to more than 700 students, enabling them to pursue higher education within Colorado. Each scholarship can amount to as much as $7000 annually, renewable for four years, totaling $28,000. The primary criteria for these scholarships are leadership skills, maturity, financial need, and academic prowess, with no consideration given to race, creed, color, gender, or Masonic affiliation. The only stipulations are that the applicant must be a graduating senior from a Colorado public high school and must plan to attend a higher education institution within Colorado.
The Scholarship Committee, which includes six highly competent members and a chairman, is responsible for selecting the recipients each year, under the guidance and approval of the Grand Master. However, the scholarship administrator, who manages the daily operations of the program, does not partake in the selection process. The number of scholarships granted each year is contingent on the earnings of the Colorado Masons’ Benevolent Fund and is decided by the Fund’s Board of Trustees. In 2005 and 2006, 15 new scholarships were awarded each year, while fewer were granted in previous years. This year, 16 new scholarships have been awarded.
Application materials and instructions are distributed exclusively through public high school counselors. Every year in late October, the scholarship administrator sends these materials to each public high school in Colorado.
