ARMTA Music Pedagogy Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Alberta Registered Music Teachers' Association
ARMTA Recognition Fund — Music Pedagogy Scholarships
Overview / Purpose
The ARMTA Music Pedagogy Scholarships support advanced-level students who intend to deepen their musical training with a focus on pedagogy. Awards recognize commitment to music study and to teaching, and are granted on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated pedagogical potential.
Awards and key dates
- Two scholarships are awarded each year on June 15. Each recipient receives $1,000.
- One of the two awards must go to a student of an ARMTA teacher; the other is open to any qualified music student.
- Applications are accepted annually; the submission deadline is April 30.
- Applicants who are currently enrolled in music pedagogy courses are especially encouraged to apply.
- Note: Because these funds are distributed from an ARMTA Trust, a scholarship cannot be presented to an ARMTA member.
Eligibility
To be considered, applicants must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
- Have lived in Alberta for at least six months and be studying with a teacher located in Alberta.
- Be pursuing music studies (practical performance, theory, advanced/upper-level pedagogy courses, etc.).
- Demonstrate a desire to continue sharing their musical skills through teaching.
- Meet the requirement that one of the two recipients is a student of an ARMTA teacher.
Selection and payment
- An ARMTA Provincial Board–appointed committee reviews applications each June; the committee’s decision is final.
- The committee may choose not to award the scholarship in any year if no suitable candidate is identified.
- Scholarship cheques from the ARMTA Recognition Fund are issued only in the recipient’s name. Payments will not be made to an ARMTA member, a parent, an educational institution, or the student’s instructor.
How to apply
- Complete the online application (click the Apply Now button). After submitting the form you will be prompted to upload the required supporting documents listed below.
Required documents
1) Candidate letter (maximum 500 words) — Written and signed by the applicant, describing future pedagogical goals and plans. The letter must also be signed by the applicant’s pedagogy instructor to verify the candidate’s mark and potential. To help structure the letter, you may address questions such as:
- Where do you see yourself in five years?
- What do you consider the most important qualities of a music teacher?
- What has been the most important lesson from your music studies to date?
- Describe an influential teacher (not necessarily musical) and explain how that person will shape your approach as a teacher.
2) Transcript — A record of pedagogy course mark(s) from the awarding body (for example: university transcript; Royal Conservatory Elementary, Intermediate, or Advanced Pedagogy; Conservatory Canada).
If you have questions about eligibility, required materials, or the application process, contact ARMTA for clarification before submitting.
