Duluth Airmen Scholarship Fund

Scholarship Sponsored by Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation

Value: $1,000
Awards Available: 2

The children of military personnel often face unique challenges. Their parents may be away from home for extended periods of time, in faraway places, and in dangerous situations. This fund is established with those particular and unique circumstances in mind. Thus, the purpose of the Duluth Airmen Scholarship Fund is to provide financial assistance to the children of current or former 148th Fighter Wing personnel who are attending institutions of higher education. Scholarships may be used for public or private post-secondary education including colleges, universities, community and technical colleges.

Application Criteria

Sons and daughters of current and former 148th Fighter Wing personnel (for any future post-high school education) who have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) or above are eligible to apply.

Fund Story

The creators of the Duluth Airmen Scholarship Fund are Chris Freeman and Mark Prosen. Chris and Mark know that there are special stresses on military families, wanted to do something positive to help out those families, and decided to create this scholarship fund benefitting members of the 148th Fighter Wing.

Application Information

Applications shall be submitted on-line through www.dsacommunityfoundation.com. All forms and supplemental materials must be fully completed and submitted to the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation by the annual deadline date (January 15th). Late applications will not be considered.

In addition to the completed application, students must provide two written recommendations from a community leader or educator, a copy of the student's most recent academic record, and financial need documentation.

Determination of Awards

The Scholarship Committee of the Community Foundation will select individual scholarship recipients. Members of the committee are totally independent and separate from the 148th Fighter Wing, and no personnel from the148th Fighter Wing will select scholarship recipients of the scholarship. The Committee shall base its decision on the applicant's academic achievements, involvement in in- and out-of-school activities, written recommendations, seriousness of purpose, and financial need. The Committee shall also consider the unique circumstances that applicants face in being the son or daughter of 148th Fighter Wing personnel. For example, a parent's lengthy deployment may make an applicant's situation particularly difficult and may be considered by the Committee.

Awards Given from Fund

Assuming the selection committee finds qualified and deserving candidates, two scholarships (of about $1000/year), co-payable to the student and institution will be awarded each year. Generally, this annual award is divided into two installments--half for fall, half for spring--and is not renewable but former recipients are eligible to apply again in subsequent years.
