Senator Grady and Andrine Hazlewood Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Amarillo Area Foundation
The scholarship is open to students from the top 26 counties in the Texas Panhandle who are planning to attend Amarillo College, West Texas A&M University, or Texas Tech University. To be eligible, applicants must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.2. To maintain the scholarship, students must keep a college GPA of at least 2.8.

Applicant Status: High School Senior
The Amarillo Area Foundation received a generous donation from the estate of Senator Grady and Andrine Smith Hazlewood, which has been used to fund numerous scholarships for Panhandle students since its establishment in 1987. Senator Hazlewood, who represented District 31 in the Texas Senate from 1941 to 1971, was a key figure in implementing numerous beneficial changes for the residents of the Texas Panhandle.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- Applicants must be high school seniors graduating from one of the 26 northernmost counties of the Texas Panhandle;
- They must demonstrate financial need and motivation; and
- They must have a cumulative high school GPA of 80 (equivalent to 3.2 on a 4.0 scale).
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applicants must complete the Amarillo Area Foundation (AAF) General Scholarship Application online at aaf.spectrumportal.net
SELECTION OF RECIPIENTS
The AAF Scholarship Selection Committee will choose the recipients.
SCHOLARSHIP VALUE
The scholarship is worth $1,000 per semester for up to 8 semesters.
SCHOLARSHIP CONDITIONS
The following conditions must be met for each semester's payment:
- Recipients must enroll in college in the fall semester immediately after being selected;
- They must maintain full-time student status (usually 12 credit hours per semester for undergraduate studies);
- They must maintain a cumulative college GPA of 2.8 or higher; and
- They must attend Amarillo College, Texas Tech University, or West Texas A&M University and choose a major of their preference.
