Health Professions Scholarship

The Indian Health Service (IHS) presents three scholarship opportunities for American Indian and Alaska Native students. These scholarships aim to educate and train future health professionals who will serve in Indian health programs. Our goal is to cultivate the upcoming generation of leaders and make a significant career in Indian health achievable for American Indian and Alaska Native students.
Scholarship for Health Professions
The Health Professions scholarship we offer is designed to financially assist eligible American Indian and Alaska Native students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. To qualify, recipients must be members of federally recognized Tribes and be enrolled in an approved health profession degree program. In return for the financial aid, scholarship recipients are required to commit to full-time clinical practice after completing their academic or post-graduate clinical training.

Requirements for Citizenship
To be eligible for an IHS scholarship, you must be a United States citizen (either US-born or naturalized) or a US national. Males aged 18 years or older must be registered for Selective Service.
The following documents are accepted as proof of citizenship:
- A copy of your birth certificate.
- A valid US passport.
- A certificate of citizenship or naturalization.
Please note that a driver’s license or a social security card will not be accepted as proof of citizenship.
Requirements for Tribal/Village Membership
- For Preparatory and Pre-Graduate Scholarships: Recipients must be a member or descendant of a federally recognized, state-recognized or terminated American Indian Tribe or Alaska Native village.
- For the Health Professions Scholarship: Recipients must be a member of a federally recognized American Indian Tribe or Alaska Native village.
Academic Eligibility
Applicants must also fulfill the following academic requirements:
- Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
- Must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.
- Must be capable of completing a health profession degree program.
- Must intend to serve Indian people as a health professional in your chosen field.
