Overview
Established in 1990, the Vinson & Elkins (V&E) Scholars Program helps offset college expenses for high school seniors who combine strong academic achievement, a demonstrated interest in the legal profession, and financial need. Each year the Program grants seven scholarships to students from Houston, Dallas, and Austin.
Award package
- A $10,000 scholarship for each selected Scholar.
- Opportunity for a summer internship at Vinson & Elkins when the Firm runs an internship program that summer.
- Ongoing mentorship from V&E attorneys.
- Reimbursement for an LSAT preparation course.
Outcomes
V&E Scholars have matriculated at many of the nation’s most prestigious colleges and numerous top law schools. Alumni work in law schools, government (including the State Department), major corporations, and other fields, and the Firm remains proud of their achievements. To date, V&E has awarded 189 scholarships to high school seniors.

Application for 2024
Students may access the 2024 V&E Scholarship application here. Applications will be accepted through April 1, 2024. Applicants will be informed of award decisions in May 2024.
Eligibility and required materials
Eligible applicants must be high school seniors who meet all of the following:
1. Maintain a strong high school academic record.
2. Demonstrate an interest in working in a law firm setting.
3. Demonstrate financial need.
4. Rank in the top 20% of their graduating class.
5. Have a minimum combined SAT score of 1100 or a minimum ACT score of 22.
6. Possess a valid Social Security Number.
In addition to completing the online application, applicants must upload or submit the following:
- A resume in PDF format.
- An essay (500–1,500 words) describing your personal background and/or career goals. Please include extracurricular and community activities that reflect an interest in pursuing a career as a lawyer.
- An official high school transcript showing courses completed to date.
- Two letters of recommendation. Each must be from a teacher who taught you within the past year, or from your guidance counselor or a coach at your school.
- Copies of any financial aid applications, if applicable.
