Introductory summary
Applicants must be enrolled full time in an eligible undergraduate or professional degree program in specified Michigan counties and meet academic and submission criteria listed below. High school seniors who can show confirmed enrollment for the upcoming fall term are eligible to apply.
Eligibility criteria
- Enrollment: Must be a full‑time student at a college or university located in one of the following Michigan counties: Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw, or Wayne.
- Program accreditation and degree: The institution must be accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) or NAAB (National Architectural Accrediting Board). Eligible programs lead to a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering, Bachelor of Architecture, or a Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering.
- Academic standing: A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is required.
- Ineligible applicants: Relatives of any current members of the Student Activities Committee or the Board of Governors of the Detroit Chapter of ASHRAE may not apply. Also excluded are students who are already recipients of scholarships from ASHRAE or from any other ASHRAE chapters.
Required application materials
1. A fully completed application form.
2. Official transcript(s): an official transcript showing grades from your most recently completed term (high school or college), and—if applicable—official transcripts for any previously attended college coursework.
3. One collegiate letter of recommendation that addresses your academic performance and career objectives; the letter must include the recommender’s contact information.
4. An essay, no longer than 1,250 words, typed in Times New Roman, 12‑point font. Respond to the following prompt: How will your future work contribute to maintaining the sustainability of the built environment or the environmental control systems within them?
