Introduction
These awards support undergraduate (and in one case early-career graduate) students in physics and related fields. Recipients are selected based on academic achievement, involvement with the Society of Physics Students (SPS), and any additional criteria listed for each named scholarship.
Important eligibility and application information
- Application deadline: March 15. If March 15 falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.
- Plan ahead: the application requires two letters of recommendation that must be uploaded by the deadline, and an official copy of your transcript that must be postmarked by the deadline.
- Applications are accepted only via the online application system. You must be logged in to the SPS Membership site to submit an application and to access your SPS Chapter number.
- Graduating seniors are not eligible for SPS Scholarships.
Available scholarships (summary of awards and criteria)
- Jocelyn Bell Burnell Leadership Scholarship
- At least one award of $6,000 will be offered annually.
- Selection is based on academic record and leadership within SPS.
- Applicants must have junior standing.
- SPS Leadership Scholarships
- Several awards in the $2,500–$6,000 range may be granted each year.
- Recipients are chosen for academic performance and SPS leadership.
- Applicants must have junior standing.
- SPS–Google Scholarships
- Up to five awards of $10,000 each may be made.
- Awards recognize demonstrated interest, perseverance, and active SPS participation.
- Recipients will be invited to special events that connect them with Google.
- Preference may be given to applicants who have overcome significant obstacles in their academic or personal journeys.
- Marian H. Rose Research Scholarship
- One award of $15,000 may be offered annually.
- For female-identifying, early-career graduate students, with preference given to those working in climate and environmental sciences.
- Herbert Levy Memorial Scholarship
- One award of $2,500 may be given each year.
- Awarded to undergraduates on the basis of scholarship, SPS involvement, and demonstrated financial need.
- SPS Future Teacher Scholarship
- One award of $2,500 may be issued annually.
- For undergraduates who demonstrate scholarship, SPS participation, and a clear goal of pursuing a teaching career.
- Peggy Dixon Two-Year Scholarship
- One award of $2,500 may be granted each year.
- For undergraduate students who attend a two-year college and are selected based on scholarship and SPS participation.
- AWIS Kirsten R. Lorentzen Award
- One $2,500 award will be made annually; the recipient is also invited to attend a professional physics meeting in the year after receiving the award.
- For female students in their sophomore or junior year.
- Recognizes exceptionally well-rounded candidates who excel academically and in non-academic pursuits (outdoor activities, service, sports, music, etc.) or who have overcome significant hardships.
- SPS and AAPT Mary Beth Monroe Memorial Scholarship
- One award of $2,500 may be made annually.
- For undergraduates majoring in physics or physics education, selected on the basis of scholarship, SPS participation, community college attendance, and intent to pursue a career in education.
- Aysen Tunca Memorial Scholarship
- One $2,500 award will be made each year.
- For female undergraduate STEM majors who demonstrate academic excellence and strong potential.
- Preference given to applicants from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, those who have overcome substantial obstacles, or first-generation college/STEM students.
- Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) Academic Scholarship
- One award of $2,500 may be made annually.
- Based on scholarship and SPS participation.
- Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) Underrepresented Student Scholarship
- One award of $2,500 may be made each year.
- For undergraduate students from groups underrepresented in science and engineering, judged by scholarship and SPS involvement.
