Overview The Dan and Vicky Hancock Scholarship for Mechanical Engineering Excellence, created by Dan and Vicky Hancock, awards financial assistance to students pursuing college degrees in mechanical engineering. About the Hancocks and Dan Hancock Dan Hancock, a Kettering University alumnus, spent 43 years in automotive engineering at General Motors, culminating in his role as Vice President of Global Strategic Alliances. He is a long-standing SAE member and an SAE Fellow who has served on the SAE Foundation Board of Trustees and the SAE International Board of Directors, and he is a former SAE International President. In 2011 he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Dan and Vicky Hancock are committed to philanthropy and community service and established this scholarship to support aspiring mechanical engineers. Eligibility and Application Requirements - U.S. resident. - Open to students at any undergraduate level (freshman through senior). - Applicants must be planning to pursue, or currently pursuing, a Mechanical Engineering degree from a U.S. ABET-accredited program. - Incoming freshmen: must intend to enroll in a U.S. ABET-accredited Mechanical Engineering program. - Upperclassmen: must be actively enrolled in a U.S. ABET-accredited Mechanical Engineering program. - Preference will be given to students who plan to attend or are enrolled at Kettering University. - Academic minimums: incoming freshmen must have at least a 3.50 unweighted high school GPA; upperclassmen must hold a minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.0. - Financial information: submission of the FAFSA is required; the applicant’s Expected Family Contribution (EFC) must not exceed $15,000. - Recommendations: two letters are required — one addressing academic performance and one describing extracurricular involvement or employment. It is preferred that the extracurricular activity relate to the applicant’s academic or career goals. - Leadership/service requirement: applicants must demonstrate experience serving in a leadership role (inside or outside school). The application should explain how their leadership abilities were developed, the size of any teams led, and how those leadership skills will support their future career.
