Granville P. Meade Scholarship

Introduction The Granville P. Meade Scholarship offers need-based support to academically capable students who otherwise lack the financial means to pursue higher education. Awards from the Meade fund help deserving, financially disadvantaged Virginia high school seniors attend accredited public or private colleges, universities, community colleges, or technical schools in Virginia. Award amount In the most recent year, recipients received $2,000 per year for up to four years, provided they continue to meet the scholarship’s eligibility and renewal requirements. Outreach Principals at both public and nonpublic senior high schools are asked to publicize this scholarship opportunity to eligible students and encourage applications. Who may apply (Eligibility) Applicants must: - Be current high school seniors; - Plan to enroll in a postsecondary institution located in Virginia (including universities, community colleges, or technical schools); and - Be enrolled in a Virginia public school, private school, or homeschool program. U.S. citizenship is not required to apply. Preferred characteristics of competitive applicants Strong candidates typically: - Demonstrate solid academic performance. There is no stated minimum GPA, but the scholarship is competitive and winners generally have above-average academic records; and - Have experienced notable financial hardship that affects their ability to pay for college. Application process and timeline - January 6, 2025: Application window opens for all eligible students. - February 3, 2025: Deadline for students to turn in their completed applications to the appropriate person: - Public school students: submit to the school counselor or principal. - Homeschool students: submit to HEAV designated chair, Sheri Payne. - Private school students: submit to VCPE designated chair, Grace Turner Creasey. - February 7, 2025: Public school principals forward compiled student applications to their Division Superintendent or division point of contact (POC). - February 10–21, 2025: First-round (division-level) review period. Division Superintendents/POCs select their top five applications to advance to the regional review. - February 21, 2025: Deadline for division leaders to upload their top five applicants to the regional review via the SSWS Dropbox. - February 24–March 7, 2025: Regional review period. Regional chairs evaluate submissions and select the region’s top five applicants. VCPE and HEAV designated chairs then submit those regional top-five packages to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) using the SSWS Dropbox for agency-level review. - March 7, 2025: Final deadline for regional chairs to submit selected applicants to VDOE for the final review round. - March 10–21, 2025: VDOE/SCHEV review window. - April 7, 2025: Finalist(s) are selected and awarded.
