Michael J. Tylavsky, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia
In December 2008, the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia joined with the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. to create the Michael J. Tylavsky, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, established in honor of the former principal of Tabb High School. The one-time, non-renewable $500 award is available to graduating seniors from Bruton High School, Grafton High School, Tabb High School, York High School, and York River Academy.
About Michael J. Tylavsky, Jr.
Mike Tylavsky — often called “Mr. T.” — was a respected educator and administrator in York County who retired after 26 years of service. He later served as principal at North Moore High School in North Carolina. He died of cancer in 2007 at the age of 58. Colleagues and students remembered him for his strength, plainspoken manner, and his insistence that young people “do the right thing.” His forward-thinking leadership positively affected many students and the wider community.
Purpose
Reflecting Mike Tylavsky’s values and intentions, this memorial scholarship is intended to help a student from a working family with financial need pursue studies leading to a career in health or technology — a student who might otherwise be unable to continue their education.
