Overview

For nearly three decades, defense attorney Jeffrey Lichtman has provided legal services and observed the challenges facing communities, from economic hardship to substance abuse. In recognition of individuals who take initiative to address these problems, the Law Offices of Jeffrey Lichtman established the Community Service Scholarship. The scholarship honors a student who identified a community need and took measurable action to address it, supporting grassroots solutions that foster long-term improvement.

Eligibility

The scholarship is open to a broad range of applicants engaged in post-secondary or vocational study, subject to residency and academic requirements. Applicants must be legal U.S. residents living in any of the 50 states or the District of Columbia and enrolled in a vocational program or a two- or four-year post-secondary institution. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required, and certain employees and their household members are excluded from eligibility.

Eligibility: Eligible candidates include high school seniors, GED holders, vocational students, and students pursuing college or graduate studies; ineligible are employees of the sponsoring office, their close relatives, and household members.

Application Requirements

Applicants must complete the required application form and submit supplemental materials that document their community service and academic standing. Core submission items include a 750–1,000 word personal essay describing a community service project the applicant initiated, a professional résumé, and academic transcripts or proof of college acceptance for high school applicants. Essays are subject to AI-authorship checks and will be denied if AI writing is detected; additional guidance and document specifics are provided in the application instructions. Preference may be given to students from or attending secondary school in New York.
