Eligible students must complete the online Scholarship Entry form and upload all required materials to the Scholarship DropBox provided by the Club by March 14, 2025.
About the scholarship
The Big Island Press Club is making scholarship awards available to students planning to pursue journalism or closely related professions. Awards are decided by the BIPC Scholarship Committee and go to applicants who meet the criteria below.
Who is eligible
To be considered, applicants must:
- Have residential ties to the Big Island,
- Show an interest in journalism or a related career,
- Be either a full-time college student or a high school student who has been accepted to college, and
- Demonstrate academic achievement.
Required application materials
All applications must include:
- A completed application form.
In addition, applicants should upload the following files:
- If you are a recent high school graduate: an official high school transcript, including SAT or ACT scores,
- If you are currently attending college: an official full college transcript,
- Work samples where available (for example, published articles, photographs, audio or video recordings). Please do not submit term papers or other unpublished coursework created to meet class requirements.

Previous Big Island Press Club scholarship recipients include Ilihia Gionson (Hiehie Communications), Peter Sur (Hawaii County Office of Environmental Management), Elisa Yadao (HMSA Senior Vice President), John Burnett (Hawaii Tribune-Herald reporter), and Chris Loos (retired Hawaii Police Department spokeswoman and former newspaper and radio reporter).
