Eligibility

Eligibility: Applicants must be currently enrolled third-, fourth-, or fifth-year undergraduate students or master’s students in a LAAB-accredited landscape architecture program in the United States. To qualify, either the applicant’s university must lie within the Hawaii Chapter ASLA boundary or the applicant must have permanent residence in Hawaii. If an applicant’s university is outside the Hawaii Chapter ASLA boundary, proof of Hawaii residency will be required as part of the application. Applicants should confirm program accreditation and chapter boundaries before applying.

  • Open to 3rd–5th year undergraduates and master’s students in LAAB-accredited programs.
  • University location or permanent residence in Hawaii is required.
  • Proof of Hawaii residency is required when the university is outside the Hawaii Chapter ASLA boundary.

How to Apply

Use the Foundation’s online application system and follow the General Application Guidelines for submission procedures. All materials must be submitted by the stated deadlines and conform to the stated formatting requirements; late or extra materials will not be reviewed. The application portal will collect contact information and route recommendation requests directly to recommenders. Applicants should prepare all materials in advance to ensure a complete submission.

Application Contents

Applicants must submit a complete set of materials, including personal information, a photo, a short bio, and a resume. This scholarship has additional specific requirements such as proof of Hawaii residency for certain applicants, one letter of recommendation, an autobiographical essay, and work samples. File-format, page-limit, and labeling requirements must be met for each item; failure to follow formatting instructions may result in disqualification.   • General Submission Form: Complete the online form with contact information and degree program details.
  • Photo: Color headshot in JPG format, at least 1800x1200 pixels, horizontally oriented, well-lit, simple background; full head and shoulders. LAF may use submitted photos for promotional purposes.
  • Bio for the LAF Website (150-word max): Short bio in PDF, Word, or TXT describing background, education, future plans, and interests.
  • Resume (2 page max): PDF including education, experience, activities, and honors; include Applicant Name/Resume/Scholarship Name and page numbers.
  • Proof of Hawaii Residency: PDF or JPG of Hawaii driver license or ID, most recent federal tax return, or other proof (required only for applicants whose university is outside the Hawaii Chapter ASLA boundary).
  • 1 Letter of Recommendation: Provide recommender’s e-mail; instructions will be sent to them.
  • Essay (2 page max): PDF, 500 words or less, autobiographical statement and professional goals; margins ≥1", minimum 10-point font, no images; include Applicant Name/Essay/Scholarship Name and page numbers.
  • Work Samples (3 page max): One PDF containing three 8.5x11 work samples with explanatory text for each project; indicate individual role for group projects and include Applicant Name/Work Samples/Scholarship Name and page numbers.
  • Prepare each document to the specified format and labeling requirements.
  • Combine items as required (e.g., work samples in a single PDF) before uploading.
  • Incomplete or nonconforming submissions will not be reviewed.
