INTRODUCTION
This challenge, sponsored by Walgreens, invites high school students across U.S. jurisdictions to create original work addressing issues that affect them. Read eligibility, category descriptions, deadlines, and submission rules below before entering.
ELIGIBILITY
- Open to legal residents of the United States — all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Entrants must be between 13 and 18 years old and enrolled in high school on the date they submit their entry.
- Professional artists, videographers, photographers, or writers — defined as anyone who earns 20% or more of their income from providing those services — are not eligible.
DATES
- The Challenge opens at 12:00 a.m. CT on January 8 and closes at 11:59 p.m. CT on March 31.
TOPIC IDEAS
Participants should draw inspiration from issues that matter to them. Suitable topic examples include (but are not limited to):
- Social media’s impact
- Cyberbullying
- Self-esteem
- Mental health
- Gender identity
- Gun violence
- Social justice
- Substance abuse
- Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
CATEGORIES AND REQUIREMENTS
Each participant may submit one entry per category, either solo or as part of a group of up to five people. Category details:
- Spoken Word
- Audio or video recordings of poetry.
- Acceptable formats: voice-only recordings or a teen performing on camera.
- No video storytelling pieces.
- Poetry entered here cannot also be entered in the Creative Writing category.
- Visual Arts
- Includes drawings, paintings, graphic design, photography, and sculptures.
- Media Arts
- Includes music compositions, public service announcements (PSAs), and narrative video pieces.
- Maximum running time: 3 minutes.
- Creative Writing
- Short stories, essays, or poetry up to 1,000 words.
- Must be submitted as a PDF.
- Poetry submitted in Creative Writing cannot be submitted in Spoken Word.
GENERAL SUBMISSION RULES
- All entries must be in English.
- Any music used must be original or properly licensed by the entrant.
- Individuals appearing in submitted photos or videos must be at least 13 years old as of the entry date.
- Entrant and all persons depicted must confirm they have read and agree to the Official Contest Rules.
- Individual entrants (not entering as a group) must be able to provide release forms for every person who appears in their submission. Sponsor must be able to contact each person appearing in a potential winning entry.
- A submission may depict up to five people total (the entrant plus no more than four additional persons).
- Entries must be original and must not have been publicly posted prior to submission.
- Each entrant may submit one entry per category, whether participating individually or as part of a group.
GROUP ENTRY DETAILS
- Groups may include up to five people total. Only one group member should submit the entry on behalf of the team.
- The submitting group member must select the “Group” option on the entry form and list all team members to verify participation.
- If a group wins, any prize will be divided equally among the listed group members.
JUDGING AND DISQUALIFICATION
- Entries will be judged based on category fit, originality, and overall quality.
- Submissions containing explicit imagery, profane language, nudity, or discriminatory content will be disqualified.
- Any use or depiction of the Walgreens name, logo, or brand in an entry is strictly prohibited and will lead to disqualification.
