Introduction The Susan Howard Community Service Award recognizes academically strong young people from low-income households in Texas or the United Kingdom who have shown leadership and initiative by creating, organizing, or sustaining community-focused projects that benefit others. Background and purpose This scholarship was established to honor Susan Howard, who served as BAFTX President for nine years and led the organisation with commitment and enthusiasm until 2017, helping it flourish. The award celebrates applicants who mirror her dedication to community service by developing projects that make a measurable difference or provide inspiration to others. Award details - One recipient will receive $5,000. - Award funds will be sent directly to the recipient’s college/university or placed in escrow where required. - Funds must be used for tuition expenses only. Eligibility Applicants must meet all of the following: - Be a resident of Texas or the United Kingdom. - Be enrolled full-time in the Texas or UK education system. - Be between 11 and 21 years of age. - Be actively engaged in an inspirational community service project now or have completed one within the past 12 months. - Come from a low-income household. - Maintain a competitive academic record and excellent school attendance. - Be available to attend the Awards Dinner in Houston on April 30th, 2026, to receive the award. Application materials Candidates must submit the following: - Completed application form. - A reference letter. - A letter of recommendation. - Official school transcript. - Documentation of financial need (for example, IRS Form 1040 with Social Security numbers redacted, FAFSA Student Aid Report, etc.). - An essay describing the community service project and the applicant’s role. Deadline All application materials must be received by 12:00 PM on March 31st, 2026. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.
