Kathleen McElligott Hall Memorial Scholarship

Purpose
Provide financial support to students from upstate New York who are pursuing undergraduate education in nursing.
Application window
December 1 through February 28.
Award amount and payment schedule
One scholarship of $3,000 is offered. The total is paid as $1,000 per year for up to three consecutive undergraduate years. Each annual $1,000 is distributed in the Fall to the recipient’s school and is allocated equally between the Fall and Spring semesters once required documentation is submitted.
Permitted uses
Funds may be applied to tuition, fees, textbooks, and other costs related to postsecondary education.
Who is eligible
- Must have completed at least one semester of a nursing program.
- Must demonstrate financial need.
Note: This award is aimed at a hardworking, motivated student who may be an average GPA performer rather than the top academic achiever.
How to apply
Apply through the Community Foundation’s Consolidated Scholarship Application. This scholarship is included among many awards in that single application; submitting an application here also places you in consideration for other scholarships for which you may qualify.
Selection committee
Recipients are chosen by the Kathleen McElligott Hall Scholarship selection committee. The committee includes two family members, an academic coordinator from Rochester Institute of Technology, and three members of the greater Rochester community. The committee reviews applications, selects the recipient, and notifies the Community Foundation.
Notification and disbursement procedures
- The Community Foundation will email the award notification and instructions to the recipient in the Spring.
- To release the initial scholarship payment, upload the required documents (including your class schedule and tuition bill showing full-time enrollment at an accredited two- or four-year college or an accredited vocational/technical school) to the Community Foundation’s Consolidated Scholarship Application portal between July 1 and August 15. The scholarship payment will be mailed to the school for the student’s account in the Fall and split between the Fall and Spring semesters.
- To receive subsequent annual payments (if renewable), upload the requested materials—such as an unofficial transcript, current class schedule, and tuition bill—verifying continued enrollment in a nursing program and satisfactory academic standing to the Community Foundation’s Scholarship Portal between July 1 and August 15.
- Scholarships that are not claimed by February 15 of the assigned year will be forfeited.
Renewal terms
The award can be renewed up to two times, for a maximum of three consecutive annual awards. Renewal eligibility depends on the recipient’s class standing at the time of the first award:
- Incoming college freshmen: eligible for renewal for a total of three awards over three consecutive years.
- College sophomores: eligible for renewal for a total of two awards over two consecutive years.
- College juniors: one-time award; not renewable.
