About Edwin T. Pyle
Edwin T. “Ed” Pyle was born on August 21, 1924, in Beloit, Kansas. He was the third of four children born to Reverend John T. Pyle and Harriet A. Pyle. During his childhood the family moved to various communities across Kansas while his father served as a Free Methodist Church pastor and conference superintendent.
In high school, Ed distinguished himself as a standout football and basketball player and went on to play basketball at the University of Kansas. He attended Central College and later entered the U.S. Navy’s V-12 program at KU. During World War II he served on active duty as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. While serving, he married Alice V. Hills; together they had three sons: Tom, John, and Bill. Afterward, he married Reva S. Alleman, and they had a daughter, Patty.
Life and Work in McPherson
Following his honorable discharge, Grandpa Ed relocated to McPherson, Kansas, where he launched Pyle Construction. Over the years he built and operated a variety of businesses, including gas stations, supply companies, motels, restaurants, a skating rink, and a bowling alley.
A Personal Note
From ages 12 to 21 I spent my summers working for Grandpa Ed at Pyle Construction. I performed many roles — sweeping, mud-tending, roofing, apprenticing in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work, general labor, and more. Those summers taught me the humility and work ethic he prized, and I’m honored to support a scholarship that keeps his legacy alive.
