American Academy of Sleep Medicine Video Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by American Academy of Sleep Medicine
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) is calling on U.S. teenagers to participate in the 2022 "Make Sleep Work for You" High School Video Contest. This competition not only offers a cash reward but also serves as a platform to highlight the significance of sleep in a teenager's life. High school students are required to create and submit an original video, ranging from 15 to 90 seconds, that illustrates the benefits of sleep on one's body, performance, and overall health.
Sleep, along with a balanced diet and regular physical activity, forms the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. It contributes to your well-being, enhances your mood, and boosts your health. Adequate sleep can significantly improve your academic performance by sharpening your memory and fostering clear and creative thinking. It also optimizes your performance in sports by increasing your speed, strength, and accuracy. Moreover, sufficient sleep can help prevent accidents caused by drowsy driving, thereby ensuring your safety.
The AASM advises teenagers aged between 13 and 18 to sleep for 8 to 10 hours every night to maintain optimal health. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 75% of U.S. high school students sleep less than 8 hours on an average school night. This chronic sleep deprivation can adversely affect their physical and mental health, academic and athletic performance, and mood. It can also impair their decision-making abilities, posing a risk to their personal and public safety.
Several factors can hinder teenagers from getting enough sleep. These include the use of social media, screen-based media consumption at night, late-night binge-watching, and early school start times.
ELIGIBILITY:
The competition is open to any individual aged 13 or above who is currently enrolled in a U.S. high school. This includes home-schooled students and those attending a Department of Defense school, even if the school is located outside the U.S.
