Overview Each spring the George and Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation awards seventy (70) scholarships to graduating high school seniors from the Houston area to support undergraduate study. Each scholarship totals $25,000 and is paid out over up to four years (or until the student graduates, if sooner). Award recipients may pursue any major at any accredited four-year college or university in the United States, provided they continue to meet the scholarship conditions.
Who is eligible
- Enrolled high school seniors (applying during their senior year).
- Students who attend schools or are homeschooled within one of these eight Texas counties: Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, or Waller.
- United States citizens only; applicants who hold only Permanent Resident status are not eligible.
- Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated financial need.
Application timing and test-score requirements
- Applications may be submitted during the student’s senior year. Online application forms become available after September 15 of the senior year.
- Do not submit your application until after you have taken the SAT or ACT.
- Applicants must have at least a 1000 SAT composite score (combined Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing) and/or an ACT composite score of 21. All reported SAT and/or ACT scores must come from the same test date.
Selection process and notification
- From the pool of applications, a group of finalists will be chosen and invited to a personal interview. After interviews, applicants will be notified in writing and/or by email whether they have been awarded a Hamman Scholarship.
- If you have not been invited for an interview by March 15, you should assume you are not a finalist; no further correspondence will be sent from the Foundation in that case.
