Yellow Light Scholarship

At the law firm of Lutz, Shafranski, Gorman, Mahoney & Lazzaro, P.A., we firmly believe that safe driving can be a matter of life and death. We are committed to promoting road safety, especially in this era of smartphones and other electronic devices that have increased the risk of accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving contributed to 8.5% of fatal motor vehicle accidents in 2019. Furthermore, in 2018, 25% of distracted drivers involved in fatal accidents were young adults aged 20–29.
These alarming statistics underscore the importance of staying alert while driving, particularly for young adults who are at a higher risk. To this end, we are offering a $1,000 Yellow Light Scholarship to encourage individuals to learn from their road experiences and raise awareness about the perils of distracted driving.
Experience is a great teacher, and this is especially true for driving. We are eager to hear about a time when you learned a valuable lesson while driving. What could you have done differently? What did you learn and how has it influenced your driving habits? Share your story with us.
Who Can Apply?
- The scholarship was available to any high school senior, college student, or graduate student who was a legal U.S. resident living in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia and who was enrolled in a two to five year post-secondary institution for the Fall semester of 2023.
- Employees of Lutz, Shafranski, Gorman, Mahoney & Lazzaro, P.A., their immediate family members (parents, children, siblings, and spouses), and individuals living in the same household (regardless of their relationship), were not eligible to enter the competition.
- Applicants for this scholarship were required to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in good academic standing.
How to Apply
- Applicants were asked to submit a 750-1,000 word essay in response to the following prompt: Write about a time when you had a learning experience while on the road. What could you have done differently? What did you learn and how has it affected your driving since?
- Applicants were also required to submit a professional resumé detailing their academic and professional experiences.
- Applicants had to provide a transcript from their current school. First-year college students, graduate students, or individuals who had recently transferred schools were required to submit an unofficial transcript from their current school and the most recent official transcript from their previous school. High school students were also required to provide proof of acceptance to their college or university.
The winner of the Yellow Light Scholarship will be selected in the month following the scholarship deadline.
