Eskew Law School Scholarship

Scholarship Sponsored by Eskew Law

Value: $1,500
Awards Available: 1
Deadline : Sep 30, 2023

As attorneys helping those in the state of Indiana, it is our duty to give back to our community and fight for justice.

Our criminal justice system suffers from racial disparities. According to ACLU,

“In Indiana, 43,200 Hoosiers are in state prison or jail, and 116,700 people are on probation or parole. 34% of Indiana’s incarcerated population is Black, as compared to 9% of the state population. Unjust and for-profit bail systems needlessly lock up millions of people who haven’t been convicted of a crime just because they can’t afford to pay bail.”

For this year’s scholarship contest, we are asking you to create an infographic depicting how cash bail practices undermine the presumption of innocence in the criminal legal system and lead to racially and economically disparate outcomes. Your infographic can include statistics that show how the bail system can lead to unfair outcomes for people of different races and economic backgrounds.

We are asking law school students to develop an infographic that illustrates how cash bail practices can compromise the principle of presumption of innocence in the criminal justice system and create unequal outcomes based on race and income.
