Overview You may apply for Gilman funding for programs or internships that take place during any academic term — spring, summer, fall, winter, or a full academic year. Make sure you select the scholarship term that matches your program dates; each term has its own deadlines and schedule. Important: deadlines are posted in Pacific Time (PT). Plan for any time-zone differences when you submit; late submissions will not be accepted. Application window and deadlines for the March 2026 cycle - The application for the March 2026 cycle will open in mid-January 2026. - This cycle covers programs and internships with start dates between May 1, 2026 and April 30, 2027 (including Maymester 2026, Summer 2026, Fall 2026, Academic Year 2026–2027, and Spring 2027). - Student application deadline: Thursday, March 5, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. - Advisor certification deadline: Thursday, March 12, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. All applicants will receive email notification of their application outcome in May 2026. Advisors will also be notified by email of recipients and can view each student’s application status in their Gilman advisor account. Eligibility highlights To qualify for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs), applicants must meet all of the following: - Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national. - Be an undergraduate student in good academic standing at an accredited U.S. institution (two- or four-year). - Be a current Federal Pell Grant recipient at the time of application, or provide documentation showing they will receive a Pell Grant during the term of the proposed study abroad program or internship. - Be applying to, or already accepted into, a credit-bearing study abroad program or internship. (Proof of acceptance must be provided before any award disbursement.) - Plan to study or intern in a country or location that has an overall U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2. Note: some areas within an otherwise Level 1 or 2 country may be designated Level 3 or 4; students are not permitted to participate in programs located in areas labeled Level 3 (“Reconsider travel to”) or Level 4 (“Do not travel to”). Additional program rules and conditions - Each student may receive a Gilman award only once. If you were previously offered a Gilman award and declined it, you may reapply if you continue to meet all eligibility requirements. - The Department of State may require changes to an applicant’s program placement for specific countries or locations at any point during the application, selection, or while on program participation if necessary. - Final award offers depend on the availability of funds and the prevailing health and security conditions in the destination. A scholar’s participation or award may be affected if the health or security situation in the program location changes.
