Overview

The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship awarded annually to outstanding high school seniors from low-income households. It targets exceptional student leaders and is designed to support recipients in achieving their full academic and professional potential. Selection emphasizes academic achievement, leadership, and personal maturity. Scholars are expected to enroll in accredited, four-year institutions in the United States and pursue full-time undergraduate study.

Description: A focused scholarship program that fills remaining need after other grants, scholarships, and the Student Aid Index are applied.

  • Highly selective, merit- and need-based program.
  • Targets high school seniors from low-income households.
  • Emphasizes leadership and long-term potential.

Award

Recipients receive funding that covers the remaining cost of attendance after other financial aid and the Student Aid Index are applied, using FAFSA or an institution’s methodology. Cost of attendance typically includes tuition, fees, books, housing, and food, and may also cover additional personal costs as determined by the college. The scholarship functions as a last-dollar award to ensure scholars can enroll and persist without unmet financial barriers. Award administration and disbursement are coordinated with the scholar’s college or university.

Award Value: Full remaining cost of attendance not covered by other aid, determined by FAFSA or the institution’s methodology.

  • Last-dollar funding to eliminate remaining financial need.
  • Includes core cost-of-attendance components and potential additional costs.
  • Calculated per student in coordination with the enrolling institution.

Applicants must meet defined academic and financial criteria to be considered for the scholarship. Eligible applicants are high school seniors who qualify for Pell grants and are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must maintain good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA equivalent to 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. Additionally, candidates must plan to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at a U.S. accredited, not-for-profit public or private college or university.

Eligibility: High school senior, Pell-eligible, U.S. citizen or permanent resident, minimum weighted GPA of 3.3, and intent to enroll full-time at a four-year accredited U.S. institution.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate combines strong academic performance with demonstrated leadership and resilience. Typical scholars rank near the top of their graduating class and have meaningful leadership roles in school or community activities. Personal success skills such as emotional maturity, motivation, and perseverance are important selection factors. The program seeks applicants who have overcome challenges and show potential for sustained impact.
