Intro
The Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) Educational Assistance Fund was created in June 1989 using a trust established from three private donations. Its mission is to support people who grew up in provincial care in pursuing post‑secondary education.
Who is eligible
You may apply if you meet all of the following:
- You were a former permanent ward of the Ministry of Social Services, or you were previously in the continuing care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) or a Delegated Aboriginal Agency (DAA) / Indigenous Child and Family Service Agency (ICFSA).
- You are at least 19 years old.
- You have completed high school or an equivalent credential.
- You are enrolled in, or plan to enroll in, a post‑secondary program (academic, technical, or vocational).
Bursary amounts
Awarded bursaries typically range from about $500 to $4,000 per approved recipient each year. The exact amount available fluctuates annually and depends on the interest income generated by the trust.
What the bursary can be used for
Funds are intended to help cover gaps in your education funding. Examples of eligible uses include:
- Tuition and fees
- Course materials and books
- Living expenses
- Transportation
Documents and information required with your application
When you submit the application you will need to:
1. Demonstrate financial need for the bursary.
2. Provide proof of enrolment if you are a first‑year student; returning students (second year and beyond) should attach transcripts from the most recent year of study.
3. Optionally include references from individuals who can attest to your commitment to your education and career objectives.
How and when to apply
The 2026 application form will be posted here on January 30, 2026. Applications will be accepted from January 30 through April 15, 2026. Applicants will be informed of funding decisions by mid‑July 2026.
