Overview

The Nutmeg Scholarship recognizes outstanding Connecticut secondary school seniors for academic excellence, demonstrated leadership, and meaningful community service. It is a merit-based award intended to support students who exemplify strong citizenship and leadership within their schools and communities. The selection process is competitive and limited, with far more applications submitted than awards available. Applicants should review eligibility criteria carefully before applying.

Eligibility & Selection

Eligibility requires Connecticut residency and expected enrollment at the University of Connecticut for the specified entry term, along with a strong academic record and active leadership or service. Applicants must meet citizenship or residency documentation requirements and typically have a high GPA and class standing. Standardized test scores are optional; if submitted, minimum score thresholds apply. The selection committee evaluates applications holistically using academic metrics and qualitative materials.

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or undocumented students who have lived in Connecticut for two or more years; be Connecticut residents graduating from a Connecticut secondary school and planning to enroll at UConn; and demonstrate leadership and community service. A minimum GPA of 3.7 (on a 4.0 scale) and top 10% class standing (if available) are expected; standardized test submission is optional (SAT 1370 or ACT 30 if provided).

Selection: The committee considers academic achievement (GPA, class rank, optional test scores), letters of recommendation, short-answer responses, leadership activities, and may invite applicants to interview.

Application Process & Timeline

Applicants submit either the Common Application or Coalition Application; within two days they receive instructions to access the applicant portal and the Nutmeg Supplemental Application. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive the Nutmeg Supplemental Form and all required documents by the stated November deadline. Early Decision applicants remain eligible but will not be notified of Nutmeg awards at the time of admission; scholarship selection is completed in early February. Applicants may be considered for one of the designated scholarship types but not multiple simultaneously.

Application Timeline: Submit the Common or Coalition Application and required supplemental materials by the November due date; selection decisions are made in early February, and Early Decision applicants will not receive Nutmeg notifications at admission.

Instructions: After initial application, follow the email instructions to access the applicant portal, complete the Nutmeg Supplemental Application, and ensure all supporting documents arrive by the deadline.
