The Lawrence W. and Francis W. Cox Scholarship was established in 2008 through a bequest from Mrs. Wahneta T. Hinrichs. It commemorates Francis W. Cox and his father Lawrence W. Cox while providing financial support to undergraduate civil engineering students. The award is intended to promote continued study and professional development within the civil engineering field.

Rules

This scholarship may be awarded annually to a single undergraduate civil engineering student to assist with tuition and related fees. Its primary purpose is to further the education of a deserving student in any civil engineering discipline. The award is administered by the Society and follows the Society’s scholarship policies.

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled in, and continuing in, an ABET-accredited or equivalent undergraduate program in civil engineering or a related field at the time of application and award. Applicants must also be members of the Society in good standing when applying and if awarded. Previous recipients may reapply in subsequent competitions if they meet all eligibility requirements.

Application

Applications must be completed and submitted online by the mid-January deadline in the year of the award. Candidates should follow online directions and assemble required materials, including a faculty-signed contact form, essay, budget, transcripts, recommendation letters, and a one-page resume. Application Timeline: Submit the online application by mid-January; award notifications are issued in spring.

Required Materials: Contact information form with faculty signature, personal essay (≤500 words), detailed annual budget, official transcript, at least two recommendation letters (one from faculty), and a one-page resume.

Application Instructions

Applications must be completed and submitted in a single online session, and all materials must be in English. Applicants should prepare a single PDF packet in the required order and ensure recommenders submit letters online on letterhead with a signature. Official transcripts must be sent digitally to the scholarships office or mailed in a sealed envelope if a digital copy is unavailable.

Selection

All applications are reviewed by the Society Awards Committee or its designee, with recommendations forwarded to the Executive Committee for final approval. The committee may recommend withholding the award in any year if no meritorious applications are received. Selection considers the applicant’s essay, academic performance, education plans, leadership potential, and financial need.

Selection Criteria: Evaluation is based on essay quality, academic record, development potential, leadership, and demonstrated financial need.

  • No award may be made if suitable candidates are not identified
  • Multiple qualitative and financial criteria guide the selection process

Awards

The scholarship amount is determined annually by the Executive Committee of the ASCE Board of Direction and depends on endowment income. Recipients are notified in the spring by the Executive Director of the Society. Award funds are deposited to the recipient’s institution business office and may be applied to tuition and reasonable academic fees associated with undergraduate study.
