John J. Nelson Sr. Legacy Scholarship Fund

The John J. Nelson Sr. Legacy Scholarship Fund was established with the aim of fostering and encouraging African American students pursuing studies in interior design and architecture, while also advocating for diversity and inclusivity in education. Nelson, a renowned advocate for design education, diversity, and unrestricted educational access, collaborated with the IIDA Foundation to set up this scholarship in 2019.
The IIDA Foundation, which manages the scholarship fund, appreciates Nelson's long-standing commitment to promoting diversity in the fields of design and architecture by supporting students from diverse backgrounds. The scholarship fund will provide up to $10,000 each to a maximum of two eligible recipients.
Who Can Apply?
The scholarship is available to African American undergraduate students currently enrolled in a not-for-profit CIDA- or NASAD-accredited interior design or NAAB-accredited architecture program in the U.S.
Application Process
Applicants are required to submit a video, lasting between 3 and 5 minutes, in which they discuss the influence of design on their lives to date, and how they plan to use their future design career to make a positive impact on their clients and community.
