Norma Ross Walter Scholarship
The Norma Ross Walter Scholarship provides targeted financial assistance to female graduates of Nebraska high schools who intend to pursue English majors at accredited colleges or universities. Awards are made to incoming first-year college students and are intended to support the transition to higher education. Selection emphasizes the applicant’s intellectual promise, creativity, and character rather than financial need alone.

Financial Data

History of the Award
The scholarship was established through a bequest from Norma Ross Walter, who served as a Navy Wave during World War II and later had a career as a newspaper editor in California. A devoted admirer of Willa Cather and frequent visitor to Red Cloud, she believed in advancing educational opportunities for young women. Norma Ross Walter’s bequest upon her death in 1982 funded the scholarship program, and the first award was granted in 1987.
