Overview
The Eugene C. Figg, Jr. Civil Engineering Scholarship was established in 2002 by employees of Figg Engineering Group in memory of Eugene C. Figg, Jr., F.ASCE. Rules
The scholarship may be presented annually to a single undergraduate civil engineering student to assist with tuition and related fees. Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled in and continuing as undergraduates in an ABET-accredited or equivalent civil engineering program at the time of application and award. Applicants must be Student Members of the Society in good standing and demonstrate a clear interest in bridge design and construction. Scholarships are limited to students who will use the award to continue formal undergraduate education at a recognized institution. Previous recipients may reapply in subsequent competitions if they meet all eligibility requirements.

Previous recipients remain eligible to reapply.

Application
Applications must be submitted online and completed in a single session; mailed submissions are not accepted. Application Instructions
All materials must be provided in English and submitted electronically in the formats specified. Applicants are required to upload a single PDF containing core documents in the prescribed order and to ensure that recommendation letters are submitted online by the authors. Official transcripts must be sent digitally to [email protected] or mailed sealed to the ASCE Scholarships Program if a digital copy is unavailable. Follow the submission checklist carefully to avoid disqualification.
Application Materials: A single PDF containing: completed contact information form (signed by a faculty advisor), detailed annual budget statement, a personal essay (≤500 words addressing motivation, ASCE Student Chapter involvement, long-term goals, and interest in bridge design or construction), and a one-page resume. Additionally, two letters of recommendation (minimum), one of which must be from a faculty member, must be submitted online by the letter writers on letterhead with signatures. Selection
The Society Awards Committee or its designee reviews all complete applications and makes recommendations to the Executive Committee for final approval. The committee may recommend that no award be made in a given year if meritorious applications are not received. Evaluation emphasizes the applicant’s essay, demonstrated interest in bridge design or construction, academic performance, leadership, development potential, and financial need. Copies of applications may be shared with Figg Engineering Group upon request.
Selection Criteria: Evaluation is based on the personal essay, stated interest in bridge design or construction, education plans, academic record, leadership and development potential, and financial need; the committee reserves the right to withhold an award if warranted.

Awards
The scholarship amount is determined annually based on income from the endowment and subject to Executive Committee approval. Recipients are notified in the spring, and funds are disbursed to the recipient’s institution business office as designated by the recipient. Funds are intended to cover tuition and academic fees reasonably associated with the recipient’s undergraduate engineering program. Specific award amounts vary year to year in accordance with the endowment’s performance and Society approval.
Award Value: The scholarship amount is set annually by the ASCE Executive Committee based on endowment income; disbursement is made directly to the recipient’s institution for tuition and qualified academic fees.
