REV. DR. A.W. WATKINS HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP — APPLICATION DETAILS

Introduction This scholarship is awarded through the Rev. Dr. A.W. Watkins Scholarship Foundation, Inc. and is intended for eligible high school seniors from the Central Alabama area. Below are the qualifications and the required application materials.

Eligibility

  • Must be a graduating high school senior.
  • Must live in Central Alabama — defined as any county or city within a 50-mile radius of Montgomery, Alabama.
  • Minimum SAT score: 830, or minimum ACT score: 17.
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average: 2.5.
  • Applicants 18 years of age or older must provide proof of voter registration.

Required Application Materials All items listed below must be included for an application to be considered complete:

  1. Two letters of recommendation (examples: guidance counselor, pastor, deacon, or a community leader/organization). Each letter must be no longer than one page.
  2. A typed 500-word essay, double-spaced, formatted in Modern Language Association (MLA) style. Essay prompt: “What will be your contribution to making the world a better place to live? Where do you see yourself in the next five (5) years?” Careful attention will be given to punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  3. Official high school transcript.
  4. A recent photo to accompany the application (this image will be used on the foundation website).
  5. Proof of voter registration, if age 18 or older.

Submission Instructions and Deadline

  • All required documents must be mailed and postmarked by February 28, 2026.
  • Mail the complete application packet to:
