Bruce J. Lance Jr. Water Scholarship

Monte Vista Water District offers scholarship programs for students who live or go to school within the District’s service area. These awards are intended to increase understanding of water issues and reinforce the value of water resources.
MVWD Bruce J. Lance, Jr. Water Scholarship
- Background: Established by the Board in 2013 to honor Bruce J. Lance, Jr. for 44 years of exceptional service as the District’s General Counsel.
- Awards: Up to two scholarships of $1,500 each are given annually to eligible students in the MVWD service area.
Eligibility
- High school seniors who either attend school in or reside within the MVWD service area
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Intend to enroll in a two- or four-year college for the 2026–2027 academic year
Application requirements
- A personal statement (no more than 300 words) explaining how the scholarship will support your success in college or other higher education
- A 1,000–1,500 word essay addressing: “What do you think is the greatest threat to our water supplies in Southern California over the next 25 years? Why? How would you address those threats?”
- A completed application form, the original essay, and the brief personal statement must be submitted by the program’s deadline
Evaluation
- Submissions will be judged equally on: adherence to the topic, creativity and originality, grammar, and overall presentation
- Use of AI to produce essays is considered academic dishonesty and may lead to disqualification

WEWAC Water Scholar Program
- Background: In 2014, the Water Education Water Awareness Committee (WEWAC) launched the Water Scholar Program to foster water awareness through educational initiatives.
- Purpose: The program awards financial support to graduating high school seniors who plan to attend a two‑ or four‑year college the following academic year.
- Award amount: $2,000 per scholarship
WEWAC eligibility and details
- Must be a high school senior living within WEWAC’s service area (students in the MVWD service area meet this requirement)
- Current GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Planning to attend a two‑ or four‑year college in the next school year
- Deadline: Friday, February 6, 2026 at 11:59 p.m.
