VSTONE Scholar Award — summary and eligibility
We are inviting applications from students in their final year of veterinary school (defined as year 4 of a 4‑year curriculum or year 5 of a 5‑year curriculum) for the VSTONE Scholar Awards. Each year one graduating veterinary student from each of the six New England states will be awarded a $5,000 VSTONE Scholar Award (one award per state). Applicants must:
- Be a resident of New England (see residency definition below).
- Be enrolled in an AVMA‑accredited veterinary college or school.
- Intend to return to New England to practice after graduation.
- Submit the general application plus required references, transcripts, and an essay as described on the VSTONE Scholar application form by February 1 of their final year.
Students who apply for the VSTONE Scholar Award but are not chosen as a state Scholar may still be considered for smaller book awards, dependent on available funding.
General Scholarship Applications — Book Awards
We accept general scholarship applications for book awards. Students in their second, third, or fourth year who submit a complete application by February 1 will be considered for book awards distributed the following spring.
New England residency — who qualifies
An applicant is considered a New England resident if either:
- They graduated from a public high school in one of the New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont), or
- They were a legal resident of a New England state for five continuous years immediately prior to matriculation into veterinary school.
If the applicant did not graduate from a New England high school, they must provide a list of home/legal residence addresses covering the five years before veterinary school entry.
Required verifications and signatures
- Every application must be signed by a New England veterinarian who personally knows the applicant. For these purposes, a New England veterinarian is a practitioner living in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont.
- An authorized official at the applicant’s veterinary school (for example, the registrar or dean of students) must sign the application to confirm that the applicant is in good standing at the time of submission.
- Additional conditions specific to the VSTONE Scholar Award are listed on the VSTONE application form and must be met.
Application submission
Applications cannot be submitted electronically at this time. Follow the instructions on the application form for mailing or physical delivery of required materials.
