Ruben Salazar Memorial Scholarship

Entries are now being accepted for the Ruben Salazar Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of the late Los Angeles Times journalist and nationally known Chicano activist. Salazar died in August 1970, while covering the National Chicano Moratorium Against the War in Vietnam and the ensuing riot through the streets of East Los Angeles.
Scholarships are awarded each spring to graduating seniors enrolled at any LAUSD High School, Continuation School or High School Completion Program conducted in an LAUSD Community Adult School.
In 2027, nine scholarships will be awarded: Eight $750 scholarships and one $1,500 Legacy Scholarship. Awardees will be invited to attend an award dinner in April.

Ruben Salazar Scholarship — 2026-27 Application Guidelines
Submit a video no longer than 5 minutes that includes:
- Understanding of Ruben Salazar’s Legacy
- Who was Ruben Salazar? What was his work as a journalist?
- What happened during the Chicano Moratorium?
- Impact on Your Community Today
- How does his legacy still matter?
- What issues Salazar fought for are present now?
- Personal Story & Current Advocacy
- Share a meaningful moment that connects you to Salazar’s fight for truth and representation.
- How are you contributing to your school, family, or community?
- Future Commitment
- How will you continue his legacy in college and your career?
- Authenticity & Verification
Your submission must include:
- You speaking directly in the video .mp4 (your voice and/or face visible for part of the video)
- A 150–200 word written reflection submitted separately:
“Why is Ruben Salazar’s story personally meaningful to you, and how did you approach creating this project?”
- Any creative featured content must be your original work
- Signed originality statement (form provided)
