Overview The Barowsky Scholars program awards renewable scholarships to Maine students who aim to develop strong listening, facilitation, civic discourse, and negotiation abilities — skills for building trust and bridging divides among people with differing perspectives. Candidates should be high school graduates planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college. The award is funded by the Andrew P. Barowsky Foundation and managed by The Philanthropic Initiative (TPI).
Award details
- Four-year, renewable scholarship that helps cover tuition, fees, and other allowable educational costs at an accredited, four-year U.S. college or university.
- Merit-based support for students who demonstrate the drive to succeed academically, openness to differing viewpoints, and a commitment to working toward a more constructive civic life.
- Award amounts vary in part according to the financial aid package provided by the student’s chosen institution and will range from $3,000 to $25,000 per year.
Who may apply Applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be a U.S. citizen and current resident of Maine.
- Be a high school senior or a recent high school graduate.
- Plan to enroll as a full-time, first-year student in a four-year bachelor’s program at an accredited, not-for-profit public or private college or university in the United States.
- Have a strong high school academic record.
- Show motivation to excel in college and to contribute positively to their community and society.
- Complete, before finishing college, one economics course and two courses chosen from: accounting, finance, history, or psychology.
- Demonstrate commitment to reasoned, rational thought, an ability to collaborate across differences, and an intent to apply those skills in civic life.
- Be engaged in a mix of community, school, and work activities.
- Live in on-campus housing paid directly to the college or university (for example, university-managed housing or housing organized through an approved student group) and attend classes in person; these enrollment and residency conditions are required to receive and to renew the scholarship.
Timeline
- Applications due: March 13, 2026 by 12:00 PM.
- Recipients and award amounts announced: by the end of June 2026.
- Scholarships processed and sent to colleges: by the end of July 2026.
