Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Introduction The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship supports undergraduates pursuing studies related to oceanic and atmospheric science. Recipients receive financial and experiential support aimed at strengthening their preparation for careers in NOAA mission areas and related public service roles. Award components - Academic funding: Scholars may receive up to $9,500 per year for two years of full‑time undergraduate study. - Summer internship: Between the first and second award years, scholars complete a paid, full‑time, 10‑week internship at a NOAA facility, compensated at $700 per week. - Travel and housing support: Awards include travel funds to attend a required NOAA Scholarship Program orientation and the program’s annual Science & Education Symposium (as well as other scientific conferences where students present their research). A housing subsidy is provided for scholars who do not live at home while completing the summer internship. Internship experience The summer placement gives scholars hands‑on experience in areas tied to NOAA’s mission, including science, research, technology, policy, management, and education, building practical skills and professional exposure. Impact and participant feedback Hollings alumni report that the scholarship and internship shaped their academic and career decisions, broadened their professional networks, and enhanced capabilities relevant to NOAA mission fields. In surveys, 100% of Hollings Scholars said they would recommend the program to other students. Program goals The Hollings Scholarship program is intended to: - Expand undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education, and encourage multidisciplinary learning; - Enhance public understanding and support for ocean and atmospheric stewardship and raise environmental literacy; - Attract and prepare students for public‑service careers with NOAA and other federal, state, and local natural resource and science agencies; and - Prepare future teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science to strengthen science and environmental education in the United States.
