Scholarships
1) Dr. Arnita Young-Boswell Scholarship
- Award: $1,000
- Purpose: This scholarship honors Dr. Arnita Young-Boswell by recognizing African American high school students who have shown strong academic achievement, demonstrated concern for their community and the Black family, and plan to continue their education at the post-secondary level.
2) Dr. W. A. Frazier — Sister-to-Sister Scholarship
- Award: $1,000
- Purpose: Named for Dr. Frazier, this award provides financial support to mature African American women who are pursuing post-secondary education.
Eligibility & Application Requirements
Dr. Arnita Young-Boswell Scholarship (for graduating high school seniors)
- Must be a graduating high school senior.
- Minimum cumulative GPA: 2.75.
- Participation in school activities.
- At least 100 hours of community service. Service must be verified on the organization’s or business’s letterhead and must include: applicant name, number of hours, description of the applicant’s contribution, and the signature of an authorized representative.
- Two letters of recommendation (no letters from family members).
- A recent photograph.
- A personal statement describing your personal goals.
- Proof of acceptance to an accredited college, university, or institute of higher learning. Acceptance verification must be on the institution’s letterhead and include the applicant’s name, term, and date.
- A typed essay of 275–300 words demonstrating written communication. Choose one of the two prompts below and address it in your essay:
1) NHBW seeks to strengthen communities through service. Describe a community service organization or activity you have participated in and explain why it is meaningful to you.
2) NHBW supports students working toward their goals. Describe your future goals and explain how this scholarship will help you achieve them.
Dr. W. A. Frazier — Sister-to-Sister Scholarship (for mature women)
- Open to mature African American women pursuing post-secondary education.
- Submit proof of current enrollment or acceptance at an accredited college, university, or institute of higher learning. Proof must be on the institution’s letterhead and include the applicant’s name, term, and date.
- Two letters of recommendation (letters from family members are not acceptable).
- A recent photograph.
- A personal statement describing your goals and educational plans.
- A typed essay of 275–300 words addressing one of the prompts listed above (community service involvement OR future goals and how the scholarship will assist).
Notes
- All documentation should be complete and legible. Letters of recommendation must come from individuals in positions to comment on the applicant’s character, academics, or community involvement.
