Introduction The Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) scholarship program for the Diocese of Newark now bears the name Marguerite E. Smith UBE Scholarship. This change honors our cherished former president, a devoted disciple of Christ, who entered into God’s loving arms in May 2024. Purpose and Legacy Marguerite E. Smith dedicated her life to advancing education for young people and strengthening the Diocese of Newark and the UBE. She championed opportunities for those in need regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or culture, and worked tirelessly to create pathways for success. In keeping with her values of faith, diligence, and service, the Diocese of Newark Chapter of the UBE continues her mission by helping promising high school students pursue higher education. Eligibility - Open to all high school seniors who are actively involved in the life, work, and ministry of a parish within the Diocese of Newark. - Applicants should demonstrate the personal qualities Marguerite embodied: a love of God, commitment to doing their best, and a willingness to serve others for the common good. Award Details The Marguerite E. Smith UBE Scholarship provides a modest financial award to help offset the costs associated with college or other postsecondary study. This is a competitive scholarship and recipients will be chosen based on their alignment with the award’s values and demonstrated commitment to faith and service. In the spirit of Marguerite’s legacy, the UBE, Diocese of Newark Chapter aims to encourage academic achievement, cultivate leaders, and support students as they pursue degrees and opportunities for lifelong growth.
