Nannie W. Norfleet Educational Scholarship — Guidelines

Overview

• One scholarship is awarded annually. The award amount is set by the Department Finance Committee.

Eligibility

• Applicant must be a resident of North Carolina and demonstrate financial need for continuing education.
• Applicants must be either a high school senior or a member of the American Legion Auxiliary who wishes to pursue further education.
• Children or grandchildren of American Legion Auxiliary members will receive first consideration but eligibility is not limited to these relatives.
• Previous recipients of the Nannie W. Norfleet Scholarship are ineligible to apply again.
• A Unit may submit only one candidate for consideration.

Deadlines and Submissions

• Applicants must deliver a complete application packet to their local American Legion Auxiliary Unit President by March 15 of the application year.
• Each Unit’s certified candidate must be endorsed by the Unit President and the Unit’s submission mailed to the Department Secretary so that it is received no later than April 1 of the application year.

Volunteer Requirement

• Applicants must complete 50 hours of community volunteer service. Service must be documented in writing by the organization(s) where the service was performed.

Use of Award

• The scholarship must be used within 24 months of notification from North Carolina Department Headquarters. If not used within that period, the award will be void.
• Funds will be paid directly to the educational institution after the school confirms the student’s registration. No award will be paid in cash to the student.

Selection and Judging

• Judging at all levels will be based on the following weighted criteria:
  • Character: 15%
  • Americanism: 15%
  • Leadership: 15%
  • Financial Need: 15%
  • Scholastic Merit: 40%

Application Packet — Required Materials A complete packet must include all of the following items. Incomplete packets will be disqualified; no exceptions.

1. The completed Nannie W. Norfleet Educational Scholarship application form.
2. Four letters of recommendation:
   • One letter from the principal or guidance counselor of the applicant’s school that includes class size, the applicant’s class rank/position, and the cumulative GPA.
   • One letter from a clergyperson of the applicant’s choosing.
   • Two letters from adult community members (not relatives) addressing the applicant’s conduct, citizenship, and leadership.
3. An original essay (typed, double-spaced) of no more than 1,000 words titled “The Value of Volunteering in My Community.”
4. A letter from the organization(s) receiving the volunteer service verifying at least 50 hours of service.
5. A certified transcript or a clear photocopy of the applicant’s high school grades.
6. A copy of ACT or SAT scores.

• Ensure every required item is included. Applications missing any required component will be automatically disqualified.
