Scholarship Overview

Purpose: “Say Little, Do Much” (Genesis 18–22) reflects the lives of Jeannette Schwab-Rosenhouse and Leo Rosenhouse, who quietly amassed more than $10 million in investments. Through their will, they established an opportunity for Sacramento-area high school seniors to pursue their educational goals with financial support. The Jewish Federation created the Schwab-Rosenhouse Memorial Scholarship Foundation to carry out their wishes. Reflecting the importance of learning in Jewish life, the Foundation supports post-secondary study at eligible institutions within 100 miles of the Sacramento County Courthouse.

Eligibility

Eligibility: Applicants must be graduating high school seniors who have lived in El Dorado, Placer, Yolo, or Sacramento County, California, for at least two years before applying. Applicants must also meet California state residency requirements. They must plan to enroll full-time at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational or technical institution within 100 miles of the Sacramento County Courthouse.

Selection Process

Evaluation Criteria: Each candidate’s academic record will be evaluated. School and community involvement, volunteer activities, and other personal circumstances will also be considered. Responses about future education and career plans are an important factor in the evaluation.

Award Amounts

Award Value: Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000 per year. The length of the course of study and the cost of full-time study at the selected institution determine the award amount. Financial need is also considered when final awards are set.

History of the Award

Foundation History: In spring 1997, the Jewish Federation appointed an advisory committee to create and administer the scholarship program. The committee serves as trustees of the Schwab-Rosenhouse Memorial Scholarship Foundation. The trustees welcome applications from eligible students and encourage them to pursue this educational opportunity.
