Overview
The Nellie Stone Johnson Scholarship was created in 1989 by the former Minnesota State University System as part of its cultural diversity efforts. From 1997 through 2006, MSUSA helped administer the program. Today the scholarship operates as an independent endowment honoring Nellie Stone Johnson’s long service on the system board and her work advancing civil and human rights and workforce diversity.
Eligibility overview
- Duration of support: Recipients may receive funding for up to two years if enrolled in a community or technical college program; up to four years for undergraduate study (this may include two years completed at a community or technical college); and up to two years for graduate study.
Enrollment requirement (School affiliation)
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in or formally accepted to a program at a Minnesota State institution.
Union connection
- Applicants must be union members themselves or be the child, grandchild, or spouse of a union member.
Racial/ethnic requirement
- Applicants must belong to a racial/ethnic group as defined by the Minnesota State Office of Equity and Inclusion for this scholarship. Eligible groups include: Black/African American; Chicano/a or Latino/a; Asian/Pacific Islander; and American Indian/Native American/Alaskan Native.
Academic standards
- Applicants must satisfy the admission and academic requirements of the institution they will attend.
- Minimum GPA to apply: 2.0 for undergraduate applicants; 3.0 for graduate applicants.
Credit load definitions
- Full-time status: Undergraduates — 12 or more credits; Graduate students — 6 or more credits.
- Part-time undergraduate status: 6–11 credits.
Award amounts
- Part-time recipients may receive up to $1,200 per year.
- Full-time recipients may receive up to $2,500 per year.
