Americal Scholarship Program
Scholarship Sponsored by Americal Legacy Foundation
Overview During its first 30 years, the Americal Scholarship Program raised and distributed roughly $900,000 to more than 800 individual recipients. Awards are intended for undergraduate study only (they are not available for graduate-level programs) and are issued to the recipient’s educational institution on the student’s behalf. Candidates may submit applications in multiple years and may be awarded funds in more than one year. Award amounts and frequency Both the number of scholarships granted each year and the dollar amounts vary annually. Individual awards historically have ranged from $500 up to $4,000, with final award sizes determined by the program’s board of directors. Selection process An independent review committee ranks scholarship applications. That committee conducts a blind evaluation with respect to any personal ties between applicants and current or former officers or directors of the Americal Division Veterans Association (ADVA) or the Americal Legacy Foundation (ALF). Evaluation is based solely on: eligibility, completeness of the application packet, and the quality of the essays submitted. Funding sources and use of funds The program’s funding comes primarily from donations, grants, gifts, devises, and bequests; all contributions must be unconditional. The principal income streams are unsolicited donor gifts and the ADVA’s annual direct-mail fundraising campaign. Donations to the Americal Scholarship Program—past and present—are restricted to scholarship awards and related administrative expenses and are not diverted to other ADVA or Americal Legacy Foundation programs.
