Purpose

Description: The fellowship supports an individual scholarly project related to Aegean Bronze Age archaeology to be conducted between July 1 of the award year and the following June 30. Preference is given to projects that require travel to the Mediterranean to complete research activities. Award funds are intended for direct research and associated personal expenses and may not be applied to institutional overhead, administrative recovery costs, or indirect costs. Applicants should design budgets that reflect those restrictions.

Requirements

Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada, or be actively pursuing an advanced degree at a North American college or university. Applicants must hold current AIA Graduate or Professional membership at the time of application. Previous Pomerance Fellows are not eligible to apply. At the conclusion of the fellowship tenure, the recipient must submit a report on the use of the stipend to the Chair of the AIA Fellowships Committee.

Fieldwork and Families

Description: The AIA recognizes the importance of supporting fieldwork participants who have dependent or eldercare responsibilities. Reasonable budget line items for the care of dependent and elderly family members are allowable expenses for AIA grants, fellowships, and scholarships when justified in the application. Applicants should include and justify any dependent-care costs in their proposed budgets to ensure they are reviewed appropriately. These allowances aim to make fieldwork more accessible to scholars with caregiving responsibilities.

Application Timeline

Application Timeline: All application materials, including references and transcripts, must be received by the AIA by the November 1 deadline. Incomplete or late submissions may not be considered, so applicants should confirm receipt and completeness well before the deadline. If applicants have questions about required materials or submission procedures, they should contact the AIA for clarification. Timely preparation and verification of the application packet are the applicant's responsibility.
