Since its inception in 1976, CCNMA has been instrumental in supporting the dreams of over 800 Latino students who aspire to become journalists, by granting scholarships worth more than $800,000. Notable among these scholarships are the Joel Garcia Memorial and Frank del Olmo Memorial scholarships.
Applicants are required to submit the following documents as part of their application. Submissions can be made in either English or Spanish.
- A fully filled out application form.
- An autobiographical essay, ranging from 300 to 500 words, that provides insight into your family background, any challenges you've faced, your motivation to pursue journalism, and your perspective on the role of Latino journalists in mainstream media, if any.
- Two recent letters of recommendation, with at least one coming from a faculty member (family members are not eligible), that vouch for your journalistic skills.
- Your most recent official academic transcripts.
- A resume detailing your academic and professional experiences, including any internships.
- Examples of your work. This could include articles or photographs published in school or community newspapers, or stories aired on campus or cable TV or radio stations. Print samples should be limited to two published clips. Video and Radio samples can include multiple stories but should not exceed a total duration of 5 minutes. Photography/Graphics samples should be limited to two prints.
