Overview

The Ed and Dot Slade Israel Study Scholarship supports Michigan State University undergraduates for whom athletics has been a meaningful part of their lives and for whom a semester of study in Israel will enrich their academic experience. The program is administered by the Jewish Studies Program and is open to both Jewish and non-Jewish students. Awards are intended to offset costs associated with study-away activities and to recognize student-athletes who have demonstrated sustained participation in organized sports. Eligibility

Eligibility is limited to students enrolled at Michigan State University who have demonstrated active participation in organized athletics either prior to matriculation or while at MSU. Applicants should have achieved or expect to achieve junior standing by the end of the current academic year and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Selection considers sustained athletic involvement across intercollegiate, intramural, school, or Maccabi/Maccabiah competition. Applicants must meet all institutional enrollment requirements at the time of application.

The minimum award is $2,500 per semester; final award amounts may vary based on available funds and applicant selection. Awards are intended to partially offset costs rather than fully fund the overseas term.

History of the Award

The scholarship honors Ed Slade, a 1966 Michigan State alumnus and long-time advocate for athletic competition and international Jewish sporting events. Mr. Slade served as Track and Field Chair of the United States Maccabiah Committee, worked as a referee and judge for Maccabiah events, and promoted participation in those games. He also served on the Board of Directors of the US Committee on Sports for Israel and has been active with the U.S. Olympic Committee, including serving twice as a judge at the Summer Olympics. The award reflects his commitment to athletics and cross-cultural athletic exchanges.
