Dr. Kate Waller Barrett Scholarship

Overview
The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Virginia awards one (1) scholarship to a daughter or son of an American Legion Auxiliary member who is in good standing within the Department of Virginia. Each Unit may submit only one application.
Eligibility
- Applicant must be in their senior year at a high school within the Commonwealth of Virginia that is accredited as defined by the Virginia Department of Education.
- Academic standing must meet the entrance requirements of the college or university the applicant plans to attend.
- The scholarship recipient must enroll as a full-time student at an accredited institution of higher learning (campus-based, online, or a hybrid program).
Required Application Materials
- Three letters of recommendation:
- One letter from the high school Principal or Guidance Counselor. This letter must state the graduating class size, the applicant’s rank in the class, and the cumulative GPA.
- Two letters from adult citizens (non-relatives) addressing the applicant’s conduct, citizenship, and leadership.
- Official high school transcript and a copy of ACT or SAT scores.
- An original essay, typed and double-spaced, no more than 500 words, titled “Your Responsibilities as a Citizen of the United States.”
Submission Process and Deadlines
- The complete application packet must be submitted to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit President in the applicant’s community by March 15th.
- Each Unit’s selected application (one per Unit) must be forwarded to the Education Committee Chair by April 15th for review by a panel of judges.
Award Payment and Notification
- Following receipt of the recipient’s college acceptance letter and verification of full-time registration, the Department Secretary/Treasurer will remit the scholarship check directly to the chosen college or university.
- The scholarship recipient and the submitting Unit will be notified when payment arrangements have been made.
