About Geraldine “Gerry” Mayo Beveridge
Geraldine “Gerry” Mayo Beveridge spent four decades teaching in Carteret County schools, where she taught Home Economics. Having no children of her own, Gerry treated her students like family. She often and quietly provided classroom supplies and clothing for students in need and anonymously donated money to help capable young people attend college.
After retiring, Gerry remained active with the Carteret County Retired School Personnel (CCRSP). She persuaded members of the value of creating a scholarship for a graduating senior at each county high school — beginning with East Carteret and West Carteret and later including Croatan. To generate funds, she organized bake sales and sold plants and canned goods to association members. Before she passed, Gerry left a substantial bequest to CCRSP with the stipulation that it be stewarded for scholarships.
Today the Geraldine Mayo Beveridge Scholarship continues her mission by assisting qualifying seniors who plan to teach Vocational Education (now called Career and Technical Education). Gerry’s dedication to students and education lives on through this enduring gift.
