General eligibility and application requirements
- Applicants must be a current Civil Air Patrol cadet.
- A Third Class FAA medical certificate and a valid student pilot certificate are required to claim a scholarship if selected. These documents are not required at the time you submit your application; winners must provide copies of both certificates to receive funds.
- Include a flight plan with your application, along with a résumé and letters of recommendation.
- Letters of recommendation: Submit at least one and no more than three letters written by individuals who can speak to your CAP accomplishments. If you have more than one document of the same type (for example, multiple recommendation letters), merge them into a single file before uploading.
- Résumé: Provide a résumé no longer than two pages summarizing academic, community, or CAP activities not covered elsewhere in the application.
Available scholarships
CAP Cadet Flight Scholarship
- Amount/quantity: $1,000 awards for six cadets.
- Permitted uses: Ground school; flight instruction at a local FBO (FAA Part 61 or Part 141); flight training on CAP aircraft with a CAP instructor; or attendance at a CAP flight academy.
- Additional preference: Preference will be given to cadets who have earned a solo badge or who have completed an aerospace-related special activity.
Col. Carolyn Guertin Scholarship
- Amount/quantity: Amount varies by year.
- Permitted uses: Ground school; flight training at a local FBO (FAA Part 61 or Part 141); training on CAP aircraft with a CAP instructor; or a CAP flight academy.
- Additional criteria: None.
Lt. Col. William E. Hanna, Jr. Memorial Flight Scholarship
- Amount/quantity: $5,000 awarded to one cadet.
- Permitted uses: Local flight training at an FBO (FAA Part 61 or Part 141) or training on CAP aircraft with a CAP flight instructor.
- Special eligibility requirements:
- Must be a current cadet who has completed a CAP Powered Solo Flight Academy at the Wing, Region, or National level and earned the solo rating.
- Applicants must review the background information about Lt. Col. Hanna prior to applying.
- Submit a one-page essay explaining why you should receive this scholarship, demonstrating knowledge of Lt. Col. Hanna’s life, and describing your long-term goals in aviation and service.
- Selection note: The Hanna family is granted one vote in selecting the recipient.
Hunt Family Scholarship
- Amount/quantity: Amount varies by year.
- Uses: May be applied toward flight instruction, academic expenses, or attendance at a National Cadet Special Activity (NCSA) or National Flight Academy (NFA).
- Additional criteria: None.
William Penn Foundation Scholarship
- Amount/quantity: Amount varies by year.
- Permitted uses: Ground school; flight training at a local FBO (FAA Part 61 or Part 141); training on CAP aircraft with a CAP instructor; or attendance at a CAP flight academy.
- Additional criteria: None.
August Trust Scholarship

- Additional requirement: Applicant must be an AZWG cadet pursuing a STEM or aviation-related degree or career.
Lt. Col. Richard Brinkman FLWG Flight Scholarship
- Amount/quantity: Amount varies by year.
- Permitted uses: Ground school; flight training at a local FBO (FAA Part 61 or Part 141); training on CAP aircraft with a CAP instructor; or attendance at a CAP flight academy.
- Additional preference: Preference will be given to cadets from the Florida Wing (FLWG).
Major Randall Diaz, FLWG Group 6 Scholarship
- Amount/quantity: Amount varies by year.
- Permitted uses: Ground school; flight training at a local FBO (FAA Part 61 or Part 141); training on CAP aircraft with a CAP instructor; or attendance at a CAP flight academy.
- Additional requirement: Applicants must be cadets residing in one of these Florida counties: Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, or Okeechobee.
